In the year of 1996, on the eve of Russia’s adoption of death penalty ban, a new warden, Konstantin (Ivan Yankovsky), enters the maximum security prison. Konstantin and his colleagues – a prison doctor, a prosecutor, other wardens – are deeply traumatized and wretched people, with dangerous and gruesome period of the mid-90s all around them. Having met with father of one of the victims, Konstantin realizes that it is the immediate who have the right to execute the sentence. Kostya, equipped with support of his colleagues, comes up with a new business idea – to outsource execution of the death penalty. But very soon it becomes clear that money and justice are incompatible. As soon as there is an opportunity to earn money, there are people who are ready to compromise any principles…
